Compressor trouble diagnosed with a meter, not a hunch

Many compressors that seem dead are being held back by a failed start component or a wiring fault. Testing first separates a modest repair from a major one.

The heart of the system, and why it gets blamed first

The compressor pumps refrigerant through the system and does most of the heavy work of moving heat out of your home. When it stops, cooling stops, and because a compressor is one of the most expensive parts in an air conditioner, a failure there feels like the worst possible news. In practice, a good share of compressors that appear dead are not. The motor is fine, but something that feeds it power or helps it start has failed.

A proper diagnosis looks at the whole chain: the run capacitor, the contactor, the wiring and terminals, the internal overload, the motor windings and the refrigerant circuit. Each one can stop a compressor from running, and most of them are far cheaper to fix than the compressor itself.

When the compressor genuinely has failed, the conversation changes. We explain whether a compressor replacement makes sense for your system's age and condition, what the alternatives cost, and the steps required to protect the new compressor if you go ahead.

What a struggling compressor sounds and looks like

These symptoms point toward the compressor circuit and deserve prompt testing.

  • Clicking without startingThe outdoor unit clicks, hums for a few seconds, then goes quiet. That pattern often means the compressor is trying to start and cannot, frequently because of a weak capacitor.
  • Fan spins, air stays warmThe condenser fan runs but the compressor does not, so no heat is being moved. Measuring voltage and current at the compressor tells us why.
  • Breaker trips at startupA compressor with a shorted winding or a locked rotor draws enormous current and trips the breaker. Repeated resets can make the damage worse.
  • Loud rattling or knockingInternal mechanical damage or loose mounting can produce knocking inside the unit. Some noise comes from the cabinet, so we isolate the source first.
  • Short, frequent cyclesA compressor that runs for a minute and shuts off may be tripping its internal overload from overheating, low charge or poor airflow across the coils.
  • Higher than normal electric useA compressor working against high pressures, a dirty condenser coil or failing valves draws more power. A sudden bill jump is worth investigating.

Our compressor diagnostic sequence

  1. Confirm power and controls

We verify voltage at the disconnect and contactor, confirm the thermostat is calling, and check that the contactor closes fully without burned contacts.

  2. Test start components

The run capacitor is measured against its microfarad rating and the wiring is inspected. A weak capacitor is replaced and the compressor is retested.

  3. Test the motor windings

With power off, the windings are checked for correct resistance and for any short to ground, which would mean an internal electrical failure.

  4. Check pressures and temperatures

If the compressor runs, refrigerant pressures, superheat and amp draw show whether it is pumping properly or has worn valves.

  5. Explain and price the options

You get the findings in plain language and flat prices for each realistic path, from a start component repair to compressor or system replacement.

Start components, hard-start kits and what they can and cannot do

A compressor motor needs a burst of help to overcome the pressure in the system when it starts. The run capacitor provides a phase shift that helps the motor start and run efficiently. As a capacitor ages, its capacity drops, and eventually the compressor cannot start reliably. Replacing a failed capacitor is one of the most common and least expensive fixes in residential cooling. In some cases a hard-start kit, which adds a start capacitor and a relay, gives an older compressor the extra torque it needs to start against pressure.

A hard-start kit is useful, but it is not a cure for a compressor with damaged windings or worn internal parts. If testing shows a winding shorted to ground or a mechanically locked compressor, adding start assistance will not fix it and can mask the problem briefly. That is why the windings are tested before any start components are sold. When a compressor burns out electrically, the refrigerant and oil can become acidic, and any replacement must include an acid test, a filter drier and proper cleanup to protect the new compressor.

Repair or replace the whole system?

On a system older than roughly ten to twelve years, or one using R-22, a new compressor often costs a large share of a full replacement while leaving the coil, fan motor and other parts aging. We will show you both numbers so you can weigh them.

How compressor testing separates repairable faults from failures

The word compressor gets used loosely for any outdoor unit problem, but most calls about a compressor that will not run turn out to be something around it. The compressor depends on a run capacitor to start and stay efficient, a contactor to deliver power when the thermostat calls, an overload protector to shut it down when it overheats, and in some cases a start capacitor or hard start kit to help it get moving. Any of these can fail and make a healthy compressor look dead.

Testing begins with power. The technician confirms voltage is reaching the unit and passing through the contactor when the thermostat calls for cooling. Capacitors are measured against their rated values, because a capacitor can look normal and still be well below specification. If the compressor is hot, it may be sitting on its internal overload, which resets only after it cools down.

Next come the windings. Measuring resistance between the common, start and run terminals shows whether the windings are intact, open or shorted, and a test from each terminal to the compressor body shows whether a winding has shorted to ground. A grounded or open winding usually means the compressor has failed. A compressor with good windings that hums without starting may be mechanically stuck or simply need starting help.

If the compressor runs, refrigerant pressures and amperage draw tell the rest of the story. High amperage with normal pressures can point to internal wear. Low suction and high discharge pressures may indicate a restriction. These readings let you decide with confidence whether to repair the component, replace the compressor or replace the condenser.

Mistakes to avoid with compressor problems

The compressor is the most expensive part of the outdoor unit, so these errors are costly.

Condemning the compressor too quickly

A failed capacitor or contactor can mimic a dead compressor. Proper electrical testing should come before any recommendation to replace it.

Replacing a compressor without finding the cause

Compressors often fail because of low charge, restricted airflow, acid in the system or electrical problems. Replacing one without correcting the cause risks a repeat failure.

Ignoring warranty coverage

Many compressors carry longer manufacturer warranties than the rest of the unit. Check registration and warranty status before paying for a compressor out of pocket.

Skipping a burnout cleanup

When a compressor burns out, it can contaminate the system with acid. Filter driers and proper cleanup protect the new compressor.

Keeping an old R-22 unit running at any cost

On older systems, a compressor replacement combined with expensive refrigerant can cost more than it is worth compared with a new matched system.

What determines a compressor repair price

Which part actually failed
A capacitor, contactor or wiring repair is a small bill. A compressor replacement is major work that includes refrigerant recovery, brazing and evacuation.
Warranty status
Many compressors carry a longer manufacturer parts warranty than the rest of the unit. If yours is covered, the part may be included and only labor and materials apply.
Refrigerant type and charge
The system must be recharged after a compressor change. Systems using discontinued refrigerants cost more to recharge than newer ones.
Burnout cleanup
An electrical burnout contaminates the system. Acid testing, extra filter driers and additional evacuation add to the job but protect the new compressor.

Compressor repair questions

You cannot tell reliably from the sound alone. A technician measures the capacitor against its rating and tests the compressor windings. A failed capacitor is far more common than a failed compressor.

Residential compressors are sealed hermetic units, so internal parts are not repaired. What can be repaired are the external components that power and protect it, including capacitors, contactors, wiring and terminals.

When installed correctly on a compressor that tests healthy, a hard-start kit can improve reliable starting, especially on older units. It should not be used to force a damaged compressor to run.

Many manufacturers warrant compressors longer than other parts, often with registration requirements. Bring any paperwork you have, or we can look up the serial number to check coverage.

A compressor that is short cycling, overheating or straining against a weak capacitor wears out faster. Addressing the cause early can prevent a full compressor failure.
